落第书生王生（郑少秋饰）娶妻多年，亚洲一无所出。一日自城中赶路回家时，亚洲偶遇一明艳照人之少妇尤枫（王祖贤饰）。枫自称身世可怜，被逼嫁入某大户人当妾待，正室所虐，故冒死出走，王仗义相助，愿意让枫暂居于其书齌，当晚王欲与枫行鱼水之欢，天忽亮，枫推说身体不适，拒绝了王的要求。翌日， 王往城中购胭脂水粉，欲赠枫以讨其欢心，遇玉清道人（刘洵饰），后者指王邪气缠身，王置之不理。王返家，向妻子陈氏表明心意娶枫为妾，陈氏趁枫宽衣沐浴时，竟自窗外窥得枫取下脸皮，点画胭脂之骇人情景，吓得晕死过去，王连狂奔玉清道观，求道人除魔，玉清把一尘拂予王，嘱王把它挂在寝室门外，再作打算不料枫却潜入室内，向王申诉前生之辛酸遭遇......
