以20世纪30年代中后期为时代背景，精品以南方某大城市申城为历史舞台，精品以戏班艺人的跌宕命运和情感纠葛为线索，通过曲折的故事情节，在如诗如画的江南美景的映衬下，在艺人们为生存而抗争的一幅幅画面中，集中刻画了郑世昌、青莲、白长起、罗瑞英、高小菊、裘百灵等艺人形象，既揭示了郑世昌、罗瑞英由普通艺人成长为共产党员的曲折历程，也描述了白长起的堕落轨迹，表现了正义与邪恶的较量，赞美了纯真的爱情，歌颂了中国共产党领导的抗日斗争，同时也展示了越剧在逐渐发展过程中而形成的无穷魅力。
